Vonage
They may be leading now, but I can tell you from personal experience that unless they clean up their internal act, it won't take them long to run off those subscribers. Vonage didn't play nice with my system (standard ol' Windows PC on Comcast) & I gave it up. I have been over 7 months since returning my equipment to try and get off their subscriber database & keep getting charged monthly bills despite monthly calls and assurances that the problem was fixed.
They will tell you to keep a landline for a backup. Comcast broadband has been off the air three times in the past 3 months--that would have meant no phone. I have a long distance carrier now that charges a flat 3 cents per minute for LATA, inter-LATA, and long distance. The old adage "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is" applies to Vonage & personal VoIP as far as I'm concerned. But, there will be a lot of people who want to jump on the technology bandwagon to try something new. After the new wears off, and the playing field is leveled with telecommunications taxes, the VoIP providers will go the way of Betamax.
