You pretty much hit the nail on the head
Your statement is sad, but true. Rather than allow the merger of phone giants, the government should be moving toward regulation of the cable industry. If cable wants to offer only entertainment products, fine... leave them alone and let them continue screwing people over. However, if they are going into the public utility business by offering phone service, they should no longer have any freedom from regulation.

The telcom's whine about inequity in regulation between them and the cable companies. Rather than regulate cable like they should, the politicians and bureaucrats are apparently choosing to let the phone companies gouge consumers just like the cable companies have been doing for years.

I wonder if Seidenberg's and Whitacre's noses were getting longer while they testified. I'm betting yes.
