Consumer screwed again
It's an old story: one company gobbles up another, gets rid of thousands of "redundant" jobs, and then this lean, mean corporate machine jacks up prices. Why? To pay for the merger, but mainly because of greed.

I'm an SBC customer. When they consumed my local system they got rid of thousands of useless technicians and customer service people, and it's now the worst phone system I've had in at least 30 years.

Also: after long, expensive litigation our government broke up the Bell system, saying it was a monopoly that fixed prices and stifled innovation. Like similar deregulatory efforts, it worked --- for a while. Then the big fish ate the little fish and the service got sloppy while profits soared. Now, under pressure from real innovators, they want to rebuild the monopoly and jack up prices.

Aaaarrrggghhh!
