"Ubiquitous ness" mess
Broadband could can and will become the infrastructure in time. I believe that it would be a mistake for for any munincipality to create what will amount to a city monopoly. IMO part of the problem why broadband is lagging so is for two reasons.
1. First the government is basing numbers on Joe Public demand not businesses. That final mile you might say. It is my opinion that the demand is not there yet. If it were then we would see a decline in AOL, People PC, Netscape $9.99 commercials. Competiton and demand has already resulted price declines and speed increases as pointed out in the story.

2. This is my opinion based on little info (admittedly so). I think another reason broadband is lacking is because of current FCC laws and regulations. I stayed out the industry I'm in now till particular laws changed and I left my last industry because of laws that were created.

One final statement on the Japan Korea etc leading the United States. The shear size and distance between population centers in the United States is prohibitive also.

Just spouting my opinion. Probably stinks as an opinion but oh well.;)
