Competition? What competition?
With the AT&T and MCI deals, you'll have to think hard to find competition for the Bells.

The Federal government authorized the new technologies, and when the winning companies in the competition were identified, the Bells bought 'em. If they weren't already the founders and owners of the competing services.

Yes, there's cable. That's it. The one competitor bought space on the telephone poles, no coincidence.
Checked your cable bill lately? Seen it declining? Not in many years.

I'll asssert that the Bells and the cable companies are two complementary monopolies.

They will both be selling packages to cover the services that overlap. Use the phone company's internet service, you can't get the cable companes' best package. Pay more to the cable company. Use the cable company's internet service, you can't get the phone company's best package. Pay more to the phone companies.

That's the basis of the "naked" services you've heard being argued in Washington. I suspect both groups, cable and phone, like things just as they are. I hope that the Federal government will act in the interests of consumers, but I wouldn't rely upon it.
