Tip your hat to history, I suggest.
Anton, I suggest you read my comment above? You've missed that the very reason Ma Bell was broken into the Baby Bells was because Ma Bell was blocking the deployment of new technologies by their would-be competitors. Without this "failed" break-up you wouldn't have had mobile phones, low-cost long distance, fast modems, or even answering machines and cheap land phones! All of these advances were blocked by Ma Bell.

I suspect you weren't even paying a phone bill in the decade before the break-up. Otherwise you'd have noticed the changes wrought by the break-up and the improved consumer experience and freedom the breakup afforded everyone.

The time however has come to re-merge the Bells, on this we agree. There is now adequate competition to begin the mass extinction of consolidation. When they once again, inevitably perhaps, become a predatory monopoly - blocking the growth of new technology - we can hope that they will be soundly smashed again so innovation and diversification will begin anew.
