4G uses WiMAX, but it ain't here yet!
As much as you hype WiMAX, for phone service it won't be for a few years. It will start in Asia, using something like GPRS over WiMAX (based upon what 4G news says) but this does not mean that the telcos won't be involved somehow. There is a lot of merger activity and companies like Deutsche Telecom (T-Mobile), Ma Bell (choose your favorite baby bells who are merging), Verizon... They will be the ones you go through for your 4G phone service.

You may also be going through FTTD (Fibre To The Door) where you have multiple services being delivered through the same connection (presuming you don't use a smartphone for this). There will be TV, phone/telecom and other services going through 1 or 2 fibre pairs (Rx, Tx) and a box that handles all service requests. Convergence is happenning already.

This will not kill WiFi quickly, though. WiMax in laptops (you do use a laptop, right?) isn't until 2007 (probubly, at best). Even with that, you will still have Mesh networks set up in various cities (many in Europe, a few in the US, don't have news on other regions). With smartphones bein more popular than PC's with many of the younger set (those under 25), there will be more of a push for 4G than for technophobic criters in the US (like most of the aging population).

This will already be popular in Asia and Europe (perhaps even Australia, South America) before the Americans really catch on, though. Maybe they can follow the Canadian lead... Watch Asia to see where things are going!
