It will be fewer telcos
VoIP is just part of the convergence movement. Companies like SBC (formerly Pacific Bell) covers some 10 states or so and owned the backbone. They also have the money to do FTTD (Fiber To The Door). They will be competing with the cable companies if they don't merge with them) and we well see all our services handles by 1 entity (TV, telecom, etc.) Small telcos don't have the money to pull fiber (needed for long hauls) and while some may go the route of wireless (WiMax, WiMAX, etc.), the backbone will belong to the big telcos. Americans are headed back toward 1 or 2 providors giving the consumer all the services they want/need. Small companies just get acquired.
