I am all for full disclosure.

VOIP is very interesting but often misunderstood as are taxes and fees. Vendors should always disclose the price for the service plus any additional fees. Of course, many don't and some customers are naive enough to never ask the question. What is fascinating is the lack if disclosure from some companies, how much are they collecting and how/when/where/whom do they pay these fees?

In my region Comcast has rolled out a $40/month VOIP service. So I looked at my last 24 months of phone bills. Combined charges for local/LD was less than $40/month so the one size fits all VOIP in my region is not the least cost choice for me. How do I know this? I asked the question and got the facts. Your answer could be very different and VOIP may be the best deal for you.

Soon your VOIP service will have state and local taxes. It does not matter where you call from or to, what matters is where your broadband service is located i.e if you live in Missoura then you pay whatever sales tax et al that people pay in Missoura. One guy told that would be impossible, "it's the Internet, Dude. Like it's impossible for the man to know where you are." I guess Dude doesn't have a permanent address or perhaps his parents pay all his bills since he must live in their basement. If you receive a bill at your address then you too can be taxed. Of course, you can write or call your local legislators and tell them to keep their hands off of VOIP, good luck on that one...
