Psychology of Hacks
Not necessarily defending anything but:

If you are selling something into a market, what customers do you target? Say you have developed an auto part, and you want to sell 1 million units? In this thought model, you can only make a part (code) that fits on one type of car at a time. Say there are two million Yugos (FireFox) and twenty million Fords (IE). So what market should you target: Yugos or Fords?

And what if the part you are making fits on all stock Fords (IE), but you have to have a CUSTOMIZED Yugo with another third-party part installed (FireFox) for your part to fit?

Then consider the availability of raw materials: how many more design (hacking source code) documents exist for Ford (IE) which has been around forever, than Yugo (FireFox) a relative newbie?

Now perhaps, if you have any logical understanding left, you will at least "get" the discussion. It's certainly NOT as cut and dried as it was the day that you drank the glass of grape juice with the LSD (Linux).
