- Dark Fiber and other Infrastructure Needs...
-
Considering that bandwidth availability seems to still be far less than demand -- at least at peak times -- and that future needs are going to be incredibly larger than current needs and usage, I think buying up "dark fiber" while it's at bargain-basement prices is a very wise investment and exactly the type of thing I'd expect from a company like Google, which seems to be run by two very wise young men.
Infrastructure, overall, in this country is a major issue... we're so far behind in upgrading sewage systems, water systems, electrical grids, highways and just about every other type of infrastructure imaginable that I fear any day there's going to be a major collapse... oh, but wait... there already was, when more than 60 million folks lost electricity a few months back because someone threw a wrong switch somewhere in Ohio... or was it Ontario?
Frankly, I don't remember or care. The whole point is that everything is increasingly connected, and our infrastructures at ALL levels need to be brought "up to par." Preparing to do, and perhaps even exceed that (while simultaneously creating the world's largest online library, which would, OF COURSE, require a VERY LARGE bandwidth), seems like a really smart move.
And doing it BEFORE it's needing instead of waiting and playing catchup like most companies and communities seem to do with everything else would be quite refreshing, indeed.
