Taxes show up in one place?

Here in Connecticut we have an income tax AND a sales tax. When enough research is made, it shows that income tax and sales tax both contribute the same percentage of state income. There has been a great amount of moaning and crying since the implementation of the income tax - usually 'it's too high'. Yet - if I ask anyone how much they pay a year in sales tax - no one knows, unless they just bought a car, and had to pay the tax all at once.
Politicians LOVE the sales tax. You only see a penny here, a couple of pennies there - but it adds up. They hate the income tax, because it shows up all in one place, and you can see how much you are being ripped off for.
Russia has the right idea - a relatively low rate income tax - flat tax. Everyone (or most) are willing to pay that. There can never be justification for any income tax rates above 25 percent. (for that matter, there is no justification for credit card rates of 25 percent either).
(Note this as a vote against the national sales/transaction tax)
