GSM vs. CDMA
I thought GSM is royalty free, or at least not controlled by a single company - is that right?

There are two things wrong with CDMA:
1) Qualcomm, greedy second only to Microsoft, is in charge of the technology. Given the opportunity they will start monopolizing cell-phone industry like MS does with Windows. Trucking satellite system is proof of that.

2) Why should North-Americans traveling abroad have to buy or rent a new phone (same goes for visitors to NA)? I have GSM phone service; vacationing in Europe last summer I switched a pre-paid SIM card in my phone and, presto, I had my own local phone number and service over there. The 1/5th CDMA 'world' market share is largely US install base.
BTW. Public phones in Europe are getting harder to find, and one doesn't want to use even a borrowed land-line for local calls since they get charged by the minute like we pay long-distance.
