- RE: "Not Quite"

Actualyl to be honest with you all Cable companies are monopolies. Like in my town, i had to switch for DirecTV because it's a lot cheaper and less aggrivating then dealing with Cable. For Example, 1 DirectTV connection $35 a month, 1 Cable TV connection $50 a month.
2) Cablevision (which is the worst cable company) has been promising us Cable modem service for the paste 6 years, well I went with DSL about 6 years ago. If i had Comcast in my town (which i can't choose because of the monopoly in place) I would of been happy for Comcast cable TV and Internet service 6 years ago. The part that is sad is that if i lived 1 town over i could have Comcast instead.
3) Cable companies are cheating the government out of taxes. You pay taxes for Eletricicty, Gas, Phone, Cell Phone and pretty much every other service except Cable or DirectTV (depends where you live). So in effect, the government has to levy more tax to other services to make up that difference. With 280 million people in this country that has to be atleast 140 million households and if about 40% have Cable TV service that makes about $220/Million (based on a guess of about $4/month federal & state tax) a month in taxes not being collected.
I'm not for raising taxes but where the Cable TV company would be collecting roughly about $2.5 billion in taxes annually that would lower the taxes on other services. Why are you paying for someone else's tax?
Also, not to mention the fact that you home phone bill in addition has to also pay a Equal Access tax so that people who are less fortunate can afford phone services. They should have that on Cable TV service too.
""Industry Regulation should only occur when abuses occur. With the current market, there is no monopoly on the Cable companies. However, I do feel that sharing lines is a bad idea. I would rather Telcos not be required to share lines either. However, I feel that just because a telco does business in a certain town, that they are the only business in that town. I feel that telcos should compete at the customer level, not the community level. Such broad concepts really hurts the marketplace."" - Posted by: ajapierce Posted on: 12/05/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
