Verizon, SBC, etc. are not protecting their
investments. Their investments were given them as monopolistic utilities for the benefit of the public. It is the Public's investment. These companies want to act like they have achieved their position through hard work and in a competitive market like everyone else. Fact is, they can't compete because they grew up in an environment that rewarded inefficiency and bloated spending. Now that they may actually face competition, they want to go back to the government for more protection.

It scares me to think the future of the Internet is in the hands of companies that have had their existence guaranteed by the government. These companies are a major reason the Internet is a trash heap today. They can't manage their business in the environment that the rest of us operate in, competitive. How they they be expected to do anything good for the Internet?
