RFID everywhere and black boxes in all our cars. Combine that with cameras in our public streets and GPS cellphones which will insure you will be tracked wherever you travel while you legally and innocently go about your business. Recently the Homeland Security Dept. demonstrated RFID chipped passports that can be read from 50 feet away and will require their use by 2006. Great, now identity thieves as well as crooked politicians can find new ways to abuse people. Will we soon have chipped drivers licenses? Will the local Police just drive by to see how you are doing by reading your chip remotely? Many streets are less than 50 feet from the home in many areas. And when you leave your home your travels will be on videotape or some dvr device. Does that really make you feel safe? Does this really deter Islamic terror or just create more opportunity for fraud? Sure, RFID and data recorders in our cars could be used for a positive purpose, if so, why is the public not invited to comment and why are these rules being forced down our throats? Can we turn this stuff off? Why should anyone be able to read my license or passport from 50 feet away? Maybe we should just use giant sandwich boards with all our personal information on display? Why is it that a chip that requires contact not being considered? There are many legitimate situations where you could present a passport or license to the appropriate authority and I have no objection to that. Why are we allowing for the possibility that identity crooks or abusive government offcials could use these technologies to abuse us?
Are there good uses of RFID? Absolutley! And I am all for their use in inventory and theft deterrence in our stores. I am not so sure why a chip that has my outdated medical information is such a good thing? Or is that now viewed as a recurring revenue stream? - Posted by: Sunny Jalolly Posted on: 11/11/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
