Simple answer.... Broadband simply costs too much...period
Until the FCC and Bush (or whomever the next President is) requires true competition, the US will never catch up to the rest of the world.

The upper middle class and above has most of the broadband access. They are the only ones that can afford it. A lot of regular people out there simply can't justify $50 a month (or more) just to access the internet. Do we need to wonder why broadband growth has "stagnated"? Most of the people than can afford it have already got it.

The FCC has given phone and cable companies total monopolies in the area of broadband access. So much for any incentive to provide reasonable pricing.

The idea that DSL versus cable promotes competition is total garbage as well. This is a rock and a hard place scenario. I, for example, choose to use a phone provider other than SBC because SBC's service is more expensive. However, I can't get DSL because SBC won't sell it to me unless I have their phone service as well. And they won't let my phone provider have access. You gotta love monopolies.
