- Just bought a Motorola. Do any cell phone makers have a UI designer?
-
I just bought a Motorola V505. The interface is the best I could find, but it is still awful.
A Samsung could not even keep the "Select" and "Cancel" keys consistent. Choose the right button for "phone book". Instead of opening the phone book, it opens another menu. The top choice is "Search", which opens the normal list of phone numbers. But the right button is now "Cancel". You must choose the LEFT button to "Select" opening the list of numbers.
An LG was even worse. I gave up trying to access the phone number list after a minute.
Accessing the Motorola phone book was much better with one click opening the phone number list. It also added "Categories", which would be great if you could select phone numbers by Category. It takes at least four clicks to choose a Category, and you need to repeat the clicks to return the phone list to displaying everybody, or a different Category. I have heard this feature is useable if you have a Bluetooth headset.
The V505 has a camera. The interface is awful. Click "Camera" and you can take a picture with "Capture". You should be able to take another picture, but no, you need four more clicks to store the one you already captured before you can take another picture. Hopefully my fingers will learn the combination soon.
All Motorolas allow the ringer to be turned off by bumping a button on the outside. Nokia allows the phone to be locked easily to prevent this, and the security code is only needed to unlock; locking a Motorola takes 4 menus and your security code.
Setting weekly alarms requires using the Datebook. You cannot set an alarm for a specific time; you must add 5 minutes and set the alarm for "5 minutes before".
These complaints make the Motorola sound bad, but long battery life, great reception, and almost reasonable menus make them the best existing today. Maybe someday one of the cell phone manufacturers will force the software designers to use the phone for a week before sending the design to manufacturing. Let me know if they ever improve. - Posted by: solprovider Posted on: 10/19/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
