I switch my charger off.
I don't know the physics fully, but I presume the plug-in transformer draws less current when it isn't charging anything, although evidently most models do draw enough so they get warm. But way less than a lightbulb, obviously.

Not only are some cellphone materials toxic, they also are excavated from a dirt-poor location in Africa which is a chronic war zone for precisely that reason. There isn't another material that works so well and so economically, but if the stuff can be re-used from older phones then maybe we won't have so many Africans killed so we can make calls on new phones.

Manners I can't help you on, but it's a deficit that cell phones don't create, they only expose it. Maybe you could start a loud conversation when someone makes a rude call. Or start singing. Something partiotic so that if they ask you to stop then they're un-American.
