But then what is the solution?
AT&T or whatever local telco or cable provider has paid for the physical medium to get to the subscriber. They own the cables, pay the power company's fee (which usually owns the poles that carry the wires) for the permission to have their cable strung up on the poles or pulled through underground piping. Are we saying we want to go to a private company and say 'we, the government are going to seize your assets and void any ROI on the investments made and give them to some other entity'?

But the other end of the spectrum, we don't want numerous companies stringing cables up on poles and into homes, do we? If broadband wireless is the answer, then we need to get regulations, including the FCC out of the way, right? Because, as I understand it, it is almost impossible for a new company to start up in the Internet provider space, wired or otherwise-mostly due to regulations or local governments giving monopolies to one provider (so part of the blame-maybe even most is with your local county or city council members).
