ScanCat problems
I still have several ScanCats if a collector is interested!

There were several problems with ScanCats. A major one was the software did a "call home" every time you scanned something and sent the scan info and your unique serial number too. Once the public became aware of this they felt it was an invasion of their privacy.

Of course the manufacturer needed this data to sell their service to advertisers. So you could hardly blame them.

But ultimately it failed because the public didn't trust the ScanCat folks and the advertisers didn't see a need to spend the money.

Aside: I don't know who but I'll bet someone lost a pantload of startup bucks on that one!
