Anyone remember the Scan Cat?
It read standard bar codes and also bar codes from catalog pages to access an internet site to give you more product information. I'm not sure if there were other brick and mortar retailers providing the device and software, but I think Radio Shack was the only place in Michigan. RS had a coupon in their monthly flyer for a free one, otherwise they were $5. The introduction happen to coincide with the new yearly catalog, featuring the barcodes.
The device was a slim LED barcode reader that resembled a cat, and worked as a keyboard wedge device. It connected inline with the keyboard. I actually used mine several times with the RS website, but it quickly got tossed in a box.

As far as shopping, I've used my cell phone two different ways. I've called someone to see if I should buy something or in the case of my wife if could buy something, and to take pictures of product, information and price for later research.
