No service should enable you to get out of your contract with no penalties. You may have to be very insistent, but I have done it. I have a Nextel and a Verizon phone. The coverage area is better with my Verizon, ok with my Nextel and no coverage with Sprint. I have found all customer service to be farmed out and none of them are what I would call even mediocre. They all need to spend money to keep customers, quit hiring third parties to handle their customer service and get serious about providing good coverage. I'd put up with bad customer service if I had a larger, consistent calling area.
