I have my doublts about the actual speed improvements of P2P
P2P is nice in that it takes a lot of bandwidth off of the server transmitting the file, since users are getting the file from their peers as well as the originating server.

I have my doubts, however, that it's actually any faster to download a file from a bunch of peers rather than a fast server. I can saturate my broadband easily if the transmitting server is very fast - but I can't seem to be able to do the same with peer to peer clients.

Also, P2P seems to have a lot of troubles with firewall and router traversal. It took a lot of fiddling with settings to get Blizzard's downloader (essentially a BitTorrent client) to work properly.

P2P is great for servers with low bandwidth, no doubt - once you have a couple of seeds, you can cut down your bandwidth. But it's not so clear cut on the client end.

My opinion - if your servers are fast and can handle the traffic easily, use direct. If your servers are struggling constantly, use P2P.
