Too simplistic
to take this view. The answer to the pornography issue was available when the WWW3 people had the option to include XXX as a valid address. If that had been adopted and then stringent even draconian measures had been put in place to enforce using such for pornography we would have had a solution which worked. Most routers could have been set to block easily. Likewise computers. Non compliance should have included seizure of assets a la drug laws. Supply of porn is about money, remove the incentive and address the end users/addicts as an educational thing.
No invasion of privacy issues, no free speach issues.
The problem is that in the greater context the other social exploiters, Hollywood and the media barons want the excuse to curtail your rights and to continue to exploit us. They need to get over it, and realise that the old distribution models are over. If I could legally buy a download for what it costs me to hire the dvd, why wouldn't I?
The issue here is that they couldn't continue to tell us what we want, whats in. So their interest is in suppressing freedom of choice, and the Internet will always be a threat to their business model unless they can control it. Freedom of speech, in the context of the 18th century when media manipulation was unable to strongly affect freedom of thought, is equivalent to freedom of expression and choice today. In other words if you think freedom of speech is good then act to preserve the freedom of the Internet. Porn is a side issue and content filtering will not work, there always will be ways for exploiters to supply addicts. How do you filter a zip file effectively without killing the system? Order online and we send you the dvd...how do you stop that? Here in Australia there are people using gps drops to distribute child porn and no doubt coordinateas are distributed by email. How do you think content filtering will affect that? Don't be sucked in to believing the mogul's bs. The internet sees censorship as damage and routes around it. You might kill the net, and wouldn't that make Warners happy!
Take a serious look at the big picture before you embrace an idea. Are you installing a tiger in your house to catch a mouse?
