Google - stay closer to the edge and exploit data connections
IMHO, Google should stay closer to the edge - closer to the users. It should exploit the data connection. It can be done without the blessings of the carriers. I have dealt with carriers in India - they are haughty (sheer number of subscribers is high), they want features exclusively for their customers to enhance their USP, and, they do not want to share revenue with others. Manufacturers also have the same needs. They want to build exclusive features for their phones. Google will be a leveler and will hurt their uniqueness and hence their USP.

Google should concentrate on building "phoneTop" (akin to desktop) features. It should run on *all* platforms - it is both an upside and a downside (consider the number of platforms). The downside can be mitigated to some extent by developing on Java/J2ME platform. The phoneTop should continue to provide mail, news, calendar, games and VoIP calls. Google should open the phoneTop development platform (and API's) for software vendors to develop new applications. Just the sheer number of availability of these applications (when they come) would make the phoneTop as pervasive as Windows desktop.

Thank you
