It really isn't as complicated as this article implies
Look at GotoMyPC. That is the future of software design. We already have what Google is advocating. Java Applets are the future. Lets further explain.

The major issue with mobile Internet devices is connectivity. Cell phones can not hear when the signal is blocked. In the USA the WiMax standard coupled with the nationalized < 1Ghz spectrum addresses this. Other countries have a problem. Lets forget about them. They do not have the laws in place for supporting the free and open dialog of Web 2.0 anyway.

Almost all developers know Java. It is the first language learned in school and Java servlets are not really different than applets.

Now lets review browsers. Companies like Microsoft and Apple have competitive issues with SUN and can not be relied upon to present applets as intended. These companies have spent a lot of time trying to develop web technology as elegant as applets and we have Faces and AJAX because of that. Good technology but not as good as applets.

Again look at GotoMyPC. The applet lets you access your home or business computer and everything you could do on that computer can be done through the applet. Now think of spread sheet, word processor, slide shows, photo shops and Flash as applets. The beauty of the applet concept is that these will operate even when you do not have a connection to the internet. So at higher than pedestrian speed you do not need a reliable internet connection. So now take all the useful servlets - the web services - and change them to applets. It isn't that complicated. These changes will be done almost over night and indead are already being made by companies like adobe who are reworking products like Flash in Java.
