You have just defined the exact scenario that we started in. Rural area, limited DSL, limited cable and no signs of future investment.
We bit the bullet, put up the money and got started. The difference is, "we put a dime on the table and we're happy to get back a quarter, pay our expenses and make a little. The big guys put a dime on the table and if they don't see a $100 bill flashing back at them, they're not interested."
True, our ROI is longer than our accountant would like, but when you consider the incomes in this area we are probably at the maximum we can charge for rates beyond our base rate.
Over the years our area has grown, we have new businesses and new "retirees" who want full speed broadband and can afford it. Several newspapers now host with us and offer a "full pdf version" to subscribers, which has been very successful.
We provide service free to our county fire and rescue and offer reduced rates for our learning/workforce training center. We have started technology committees with several different county governments to help them bring broadband to their residents in a rational manner. None of the big players were even interested in doing any of this.
So, we make a little less, sleep good knowing that we are not cheating our customers and still provide 24/7 service with real people!
As for WiMax, until the auction for the 700 spectrum is over we can't really use it. Sure would be nice if they gave some of us little guys a shot at the auction. - Posted by: WISP Posted on: 11/04/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
