I agree completely. My ISP is also the local telco (DSL) and I live in a very rural area. When I first signed up with them I was the only one with DSL through the local CO which meant I pretty much got everything (speed) I signed up for. The problem is that the telco has now added a lot of customers but have not increased the bandwidth to the CO so speeds have and continue to drop as more are added.

Yes we complain (quite loudly) about it and the excuse is always the same, there aren't enough cusotners to justify bringing more bandwidth to the CO. Ok, I sort of understand that however I would argue that it isn't true and here is why.

A WISP is installing WiMAX in the area to compete against the telco and instead of competeing the telco has filed a law suit trying every trick they can think of to stop it from happening. Surely if the WISP see's a potentcial for return on investment then so should the telco. Ah, but that means investment and they can no longer milk the cash cow the old twisted pair represents.

This same thing is being played out all across the nation. Instead of real competition we see the telcos, WISP's, and cable companies trying to fight it out in the court room and through the FCC. Of course the real losers in this are the consumers.

If our federal government didn't have a track record of screwing up a free meal I would say to heck with it and nationalize the entire US internet...
