Can you turn it off?
The problem I have with this tech is whether or not it can be used to surreptitiously invade individuals' privacy. However, if this capability can be used to generate income for people, it will. Let's say that a company that now solicits 18-29 year-olds to carry custom cell phones through which they can be polled on their media and entertainment choices decides to add this chip to their phones, perhaps not being entirely proactive in telling them about this new "feature" (hiding the disclosure in a small-print "privacy information" form). Voila - a whole new channel of demographic information, for free. Now they can find out where their 18-29s spend their time, 24/7.

The answer to this problem would be a way to audit whether or not one is being tracked without one's permission. I could see this being offered at mall kiosks - a booth that monitors all of your RF emissions and tells you who's tracking you. Might be worth, oh, $5/scan to people who're concerned. Might also be a nice power accessory for laptops and PDAs.
