"Finder's Keepers!" in the US and the UK
You make a very interesting point indeed; I can honestly say that I was not aware of such a wide transatlantic culture gap on what boils down to "Finder's Keepers!"

While the US taught the world by example how to litigate over every chipped fingernail and even how to chase ambulances, we in the UK - knowing instinctively that 'The law is an ass' and used it only when it could absolutely no longer be avoided - relied upon common sense, common courtesy, consideration and good manners to sort out everything else.

Then along came the Common Market with their view of Human Rights and what's right and what's wrong in microscopic detail... and not only has common sense been turned on it's head, the lawyers and infrastructure are making billions stirring it all up because we can no longer stop them.

While the British Citizen still labours under the misapprehension that "his home is his castle" (a standing joke if you know anything about police procedure, especially when suspected of tax fraud or certain other types of violation), I suppose he or she is still entitled to feel a bit miffed if a casual passer-by uses a few percent of their bandwidth without even bothering to ask.

That the local Mr Plod saw fit to arrest said passer-by happily talking away on Skype, probably as a test case, rather than the idiot who had left their WiFi unsecured, makes the mind boggle. I just hope those charges get dropped sooner, rather than later, if we are not to become the world's laughing-stock... again.
