Hooking Professionals.
ZDnet is not for the common man. It is for IT professionals. One of the notions that I think has gone over poorly in our industry is that you can take a common man, say a displaced timber worker, and turn him or her into an IT professional after half a year of training.

Sure, a certain competency might be achieved in operations and hardware, but if you look at advertisements today for IT professionals, they usually require masters degrees in computer science or some other science related field and years of experience does not substitute any more. It is rare today for a trade school to turn out an employable graduate in IT and Micorosoft Cerifications are actually a negative.

We still have a lot of IT professionals that do not have the credentials on paper and are productive. Eventually, the company they work for will have an embezzlement and the lack of credentials will become an issue for the management that decides not to bolt. If the professional is not a US citizen it is even more of an issue.

But clearly there can be learning on the job and by experience, and I know more than a few excellent programmers who's only degree is a liberal arts degree. The point to remember is that ours is an industry where none of us have more than five years of relevant technical experience and yet technical proficiency is not enough. There is a certain analytical grasp that allows the successful to negotiate around all the truly poor systems management finds by reading magazines.
