A phone without a service provider is not much use
"But analysts predict that a cheaper phone from Apple, which leads the digital music player market, could pose a much bigger threat to long-established phone makers such as Nokia, Motorola, Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericsson, owned by Sony and Ericsson"

I wonder how many people select service based purely on the physical phone. Personally, I select the service first and then pick a phone from the list.

So for me, if the iPhone only works with AT&T, and if AT&T doesn't offer a service I want to use, then I can't use the phone so won't buy it. If the majority of consumers make purchasing decisions the same way, then the impact on the major vendors (Nokia, Motorola, Samsung Electronics, etc) won't be as great as this article predicts.

There are some folks who no doubt will buy this thing for its other features. I want a device I can make phone calls on - it just has to work.
