- Vonage and T-Mobile Wi-Fi Phones
-
I owned a Vonage Wi-Fi phone made by UTStarcomm. It was a dismal failure. I travelled from my home in Colorado last year and it didn't work anywhere because there are virtually no free wi-fi spots available. I was in Germany and it worked - briefly - at a USO club at Ramstein AFB. When I landed in Kuwait and visited the Kuwait Intl Airport and other hot spots I thought it would be my ticket to free calls home. It never worked, not one single time. I cancelled the service and sold the handset on E-Bay.
T-Mobile has a great idea in its @home hotspot service. Their handsets use cellular and wi-fi interchangeably and if you originate on Wi-Fi (say on your way out of your home) the call is free, even if it switches to the GSM network and the call lasts for hours. This will be the ticket. Siemens clearly sees the issues and seem to be heading down the right track.
Visit www.danmosqueda.blogspot.com for my thoughts on other tech issues including Safari for Vista, Palm's Foleo, the effectiveness of the Walther PPK. - Posted by: 007baf Posted on: 06/28/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
