FIOS vs Cablevision Optimum service on LI
I recently made the switch to FIOS. Basic 'CABLE' channels are clearer on FIOS than Cablevision; HD is HD. Biggest difference is in the usability of the "boxes". Cablevision's boxes were a lot easier to use to scan what's on the channels. With my motorola box, if you "scan" the channels using the bottom half of the tv screen, you can get to a spot where you can only go back to your original channel; not jump to this "new" channel. That wasn't the case with the Scientific American (?) box from Cablevision. The service has several minor quirks that are very annoying to my wife but too minor to call and complain about (in my estimation).
One major point, when I called Cablevision to cancel (after the FIOS installation) they made an offer that would have beaten the price of Verizon and with the recent announcement by Cablevision of offering the add'l 18 HD channels, I am disappointed to be missing them.
My Cablevision vs FIOS scorecard:
Cablevision:
Better remote experience
less quirky issues
better screen control (able to adjust screen size (zoom, stretch, etc)on wide screen tv; not able to with FIOS except on a system wide basis)
FIOS
More HD channels (though Cablevision is about to kick butt here)
NFL network (SD and HD)
On demand HBO plus for no extra cost
Better basic TV picture
On wide screen tv, the unused screen is black (was light grey w/ cablevision) more pleasing to my eyes.
Channels change much quicker (less delay) than w/ Cablevision boxes
