It really is still a phone
Study after study has shown that cell phone customers are overwhelmingly interested in call reliability and quality. Only after that need is satisfied do customers think about non-phone features. After all the hoopla, that little fact may make or break the iPhone. (That's also why Verizon succeeded so brilliantly with its "can you hear me now" ad campaign.)

Study after study has also shown that every carrier has holes in its coverage, even within a densely populated, strong-coverage area. The short wavelength of the cell signal means that sometimes the center of downtown is the worst possible place to be, because buildings will block the tower signal, regardless of who your carrier is.

A family member works for one of the major cell companies, but AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon subscribers are among his siblings. We all pick our carriers depending on where we are most likely to use our phones and who has the most reliable signal there.
