Lowell, Michigan sold it's homegrown HSI
One of the last vestiges of small-town America owning it's cable system. "The city has managed its own cable system, providing cable to residents of Lowell, and Lowell and Vergennes Townships for the past 25 years" reports WZZM TV.
The city council has voted to sell their system to Comcast for $3.5 million. Of course, Lowell is a small town, but it's in a metro area with more than 500,000 people. Apparently they felt they couldn't make the req'd improvements (fiber, etc...) to make the system work. City officials say they simply can't keep up with technology. An upgrade right now, to get the equipment to where it should be, would cost $1 million.
If the sale happens, one employee of the cable system will lose their job, and Comcast will pay the city 5% of subscription fees collected from Lowell residents.

It's a shame for this to happen. Had they read your article, they probably could have put Homeland Security money to actual good work with some additional innovation. Now Lowell will be Comcastic!
