Until the US wireless industry allows people to more easily port their phones to other carriers via GSM as in Europe and Asia, I'd rather the manufactures have more power than the carriers. Given the two-year contracts carriers force upon consumers, more power to manufactures will likely allow more freedom to consumers who wish to switch. I'd rather pay ~$450 for an iPhone that I could use on any platform than say ~$250 (after rebate/subsidy) and be forced to use an expensive service agreement for two years.
