I'm impressed. The idea includes synesthesia in a creative way, and could lead to people thinking differently.
Just as chinese people think a little differently from westerners, partly because of their ideogrammatic language, people would think differently if trained to read in color. The unusual color images the kids made is some evidence of that.
So think less about the technology and more about what areas of the brain are being played with.
