US isn't exactly a tech backwater
I will agree that the rest of the world is ahead of the US in
mobile broadband, but the US isn't a tech backwater.

The US has fiber to the home and wired broadband over much of its territory. Other countries have to resort to wireless because it's a lot cheaper (and much slower) than FIOS or cable.

Wired is also much more reliable, secure (especially fiber) than wireless.

The US has a lead in WiFi hotspots, and I can't think of any reasn why these can't be converted into WiFi/WiMax hotspots, particularly since Intel (an American company) will come out with WiFi/WiMax chipsets, which will be incorporated into Linksys (a division of an American company named Cisco) and other vendors.

A WiFi/WiMax router/access point could cost $50 in 3 years, which would give the US a tremendous lead in wireless broadband. All we would need then is an enlightened customer agreement for the millions of US locations (both business and households) that would buy these routers.

WiFi/WiMax chipsets will be everywhere: laptops, PC motherboards, cordless phones, and yes, even cell phones. You might not be able to buy the cell phone from a carrier like Verizon or Sprint, because they will try to lock customers out of these technologies.

But you may be able to buy them from companies like Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Samsung, HP, Apple, Panasonic, Sony, and others. Oh, and did I mention GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai?

So, rest of the world, enjoy your wireless broadband lead for now. But as Yamamoto said after Pearl Harbor, "I'm afraid we've awoken a sleeping giant."
