It's true that for most adult possession laws when conducted amongst consenting adults, little harm is made. Special laws are in place with regards to certain imagery because the trafficking and possession of it fuels a demand.
I too do not believe that simple possession of an image is illegal in and of itself. Furthermore, if one were to create an original image portraying kiddie porn using art materials, sculpture or computer software for instance, none of those images would be outright illegal. Look at some of the disturbing mutant baby images from HR giger for example - creepy.
The sharing, trafficking or collection of underage sexual activity is harming the child who was the victim and encourages further production/predation. Our series of laws demands full protection of juveniles because they are not implicitly protected by the US constitution. Children have the right to claim their innocence.
