Should Patents Grant Monopoly?
The courts have long held that a monopoly is not in keeping with the best interests
of US citizens with limited exceptions for municipal utilities and services. Telephone
servince has long been removed from this classifications with the break-up of the
former AT&T and the advent of competitive providers. It would seem in a world
headed toward VoIP, that these broadly described patents hand the keys to VoIP to a
single provider, Verizon, emabeling them to monopolize the service if they prevail
and continue the pattern of suing anyone providing VoIP services. So I have to ask
the question, "Are we attemptiing to legalize a telephone monopoly again?"
