This means that they are making money on a product that they did not pay for. This is a violation and it can be shut down. They are not impeding development because this company is using a technology not improving it. If the outcome of this is that they develop their own technology, then the process did work.

Now, i would love to know exactly what patents they are disputing. I thought most of voip was open source. From what the articles have said.. it appears that the patents relate to the bridging of POTS and VoIP. As they have said, there are commerically available devices that do this.. and if vonage is using them, then it would be up to the devices manufacturer to pay for patents not vonage. I always thought vonage used linux systems to do their switching.

Here is another question related to their patents.. what about open source linux stuff that does exactly what the patents cover?
