Why Max? Pervasive Connectivity.
I signed up for got CDPD wireless data from a USAT Corp a while back, then Sprint rolled 1x-rtt-- the first to market as I recall. Next was EVDO-- a nice hop in speed (and equivalent available from Verizon, and similar from Cingular, AT&T Wireless, or whatever the name du jour is). USAT set me up with the Sierra 595 cards to get Rev A evdo-- and I have only really found it at airports. The speed is good but not noticeably better.. this said AT&T's HSDPA purportedly belts along.

WiMax would be a massive boost to speed, however Sprint will ding your bandwidth use with a monthly recurring charge. WiMax has the potential to open pervasive nationwide internet access. Co-opted by the carriers 'building-out' this public network, the DC lobby crowd will stonewall this potential open communications platform.

Someone has to manage a WiMax infrastructure-- but perhaps the time is nigh to have a wireless internet structure akin to the wired internet. Cast a mesh over the country and have truly pervasive connectivity.
