WiMax works fine on today's laptops
Here is the deal as it has been explained to me by tech support. Microsoft Windows software apparently degrades WiFi if you add WiMax to it as everyone is doing in Seattle. WiMax is a standard to which Microsoft should have conformed to. It is one of the reasons the US is going to HiDef TV. In fact some of the spectrum freed up by HiDef TV will be deployed for WiMax.

I can only speak to my experience on two Sony VIO laptops. Prior to WiMax, my wife and I had almost acceptable WiFi on the older Sony laptop. There are a couple of coffee shops in the neighborhood and the older machine could pick up one or the other on any given week day. Interestingly the newer machine never could pick up acceptable signals.

After installing the ClearWire software, neither machine has acceptable WiFi connectivity to the Internet.

WiFi, being insecure literally garage door technology, just never should have had the range of the older lap top. Society really is better served by limiting the range of WiFi to a few rooms, a house but not a city block and several blocks.

I think the industry will be degrading WiFi in every new PC laptop and sooner than you think it will be replaced by WiMax.

But you need not wait. External antenna can be added to any laptop and they do work via an inverter in your car or boat. It does appear with the Sony brand at least that your move to WiMax will degrade WiFi if you run Windows. I have loaded Microsoft Linux in a VMWare virtual machine and eventually will discover is WiFi performance is restored. Again The Tech Support at the boat show tells me that WiFi performance degradation on machines that have both WiFi and WiMax is a Microsoft Windows software feature.
