Because WiMax is not supported in laptops yet!
Until later this year or next, there is no (or very limited options for) WiMax in laptops, thus the need for WiFi. And who (besides places of employment) don't use mobiles (as in laptop and smartphones) these days?

This issues is supposed to be resolved this year, but it ain't there yet (in either PCMCIA, USB or internal chip sets). Until that happens, you still have to use WiFi in the US.
