Unreal Expectations
I have had Vonage since they first came to my area and have had dozens of friends sign up, they love it.

I would like to say that Vonage has not mislead me, or my friends in any way. Vonage was upfront in thier documentation of what they provided and how they provided it.

As for compatability I never expected my adapter to work with other VOIP networks, nor did I see anywhere in thier documentation that they every did. The policy of locking the adapter was a good idea when you have a large customer base, it keeps the configuration consistent and maintainable.

I am saving about 70% from my landline costs. I have also had two price reduction since becoming a member. I can care less if they keep 90% of thier revenue. When was the last time a Telco "Reduced" thier monthly payment?

I like the benefit that I can take my VOIP phone with me when I travel, I can continue to make and receive calls.I know you can't do that with your landline

I also like the "Backup" feature where the service will call another number when my cable service goes down. Can you do that with a landline Telco, no.

I keep cable modem and Vanage adapter on a UPS so I am not affected by power outages.

Does your Telco give you the ability to check your Voicemail from online anywhere in the world? how about a list of every call nade and received and its length ? I think not.

IMHO - Vonage Rocks!

Its funny that you mention the "Any" computer. I'm guessing you mean Apple or Linux. Get over it, you should have read and understood the system requirements.
