huh? FUD alert!
Where are you getting these claims of "slow dowloads while talking or poor voice during fast downloads, no service during power outage, iffy 911, etc"?!?

On a cable internet which regularly clocks in at 4-5 MB/s (checked at all times of the day), the under 100k used by VoIP is a non-issue. As to 911; I've used 911 three times now (neighbor issue - don't ask); and the calls always go through (I remember the news on the 911 thing, that's OLD info that's a non-issue nowadays).

That just leaves power outages which can be a concern in some parts of the country - but only hit here maybe once every two to three years - my old Verizon line went about that often, so it's a wash for me (again, other parts of the country, performance may vary).

As to cost - $27/mo with vonage (including all taxes and fees) blows away the $50+/mo that verizon wanted (after taxes and fees). I already had cable internet, so no change in cost there (no DSL available here, and ClearWire is at least a year from service here). As was said by someone else, I may now qualify for new user plans with Verizon that they refused to make available to me before - but I don't have a reason to go through the headache of changing at this point.

Granted, while I like my VoIP service, I never recommend Vonage to others. Their tech-support is some of the worst I've ever come accross. If the service works, you're in good shape and can cound on reliable service with no problems. If it doesn't work and you can't figure out how to fix it on your own, then you're better off just cutting your losses and going to either the phone company or the cable company rather than try working with Vonage's customer support. I love the call quality and the cost; but IMHO they'll go under eventually and I'll look for an alternate provider at that point - but I figure I have a few more years with them before I need to worry about that.
