Too late to the plate...
Considering the fact that Apple has been working on the iPhone for the last three years at full steam to get this device to market, my guess is, it will be a year or more before the competition can come out with something comparable. By then it will be too late, and the iPhone will be well entrenched.

Something Jobs said at the MacExpo was very telling when he mentioned how much of the technology in the new iPhone was patented. So if another competitor wants to incorporate some of Apple?s innovations into their own products, chances are they?ll have to license said features from Apple. This is turn will generate yet another revenue stream for Apple. Apple could also deny allowing patented features be used by competitors if they deem them a threat.

It seems Steve Jobs has learned some very hard lessons from the Monster of Redmond. It was Bill Gates and Microsoft that created the fine art of patenting everything and charging or holding back technology to its competition. It should be an interesting year after the debut of the iPhone in June. I look forward to the follies.
