Verizon uses CDMA.
I think that is because version uses CDMA and most other providers use GSM. So if you can buy an unlocked GSM phone you can use it with any provider that supports GSM Where with Verizon(and I think Nextel and/or Sprint) you need to get a phone that supports their network.
